del.icio.us

Summary: We provide numerous questions that you need to answer before selecting a male stud. A quality sire is hard to find. They are not the ones running around the neighborhood.

Almost 100% of intact males can sire a litter; however, only about 3% should. A quality sire is very difficult to find. They are not the ones running around the neighborhood. They are generally proven champions and have been paraded and pampered since being labeled a champion.

As we discussed in our dog breeding article, having your dog bred has numerous responsibilities. Below is a list of questions that may help you in your quest to find a championship sire:

  • Is the prospective male free of all known genetic problems?
  • How is his conformation?
  • Is he a superior specimen of his breed?
  • Does he meet the AKC standard? (This can be researched on the AKC website.)
  • Have you gone over the sire's pedigree?
  • Is the prospective stud free of parasites and disease?
  • What is his history of breeding?
  • Is he DNA certified by AKC (this is a fairly simple process, but does take time)?
  • What kind of environment does he live in? Fenced? (Your female will temporarily be in that environment).
  • What is his appearance like?
  • Has he proven to sire healthy and high quality puppies?
  • Have you seen any puppies he has sired?
  • After all of your searching for the best possible male will you be improving the breed and will you be producing better puppies?
  • Have you considered how much the stud fee will be?

The stud fee could be a pick of the litter or cost you from hundreds of dollars to thousands depending on the stud and his background. Most breeders will insist that the female go to the male for breeding purposes. If your female needs to go a long way to a male, will you have the time to take her? What about the costs involved? If you have to have your female shipped, are you prepared for an additional shipping cost?

Hopefully, our list of questions will assist you as you search for a sire. If you would like to contribute further suggestions about 'Selecting a Male Sire', we invite you to leave a comment below so the rest of our visitors can benefit from your knowledge.
