Should I Have My Puppy Neutered?

So you’ve bought a male puppy and are considering whether to get him neutered? Male puppies are neutered and female puppies are spayed. Neutering is the complete removal of a male dog’s testicles. Neutering a male dog prevents prostate disease and testicular cancer in dogs. Neutering eliminates testosterone which is the male sex hormone that is responsible for behaviors such as marking with urine, mounting, fighting and the desire to roam and search for females.

Neutering is a quick, safe and painless procedure. Your veterinarian will let you know at what age would be best for this procedure. Your vet though will probably recommend anywhere from 4-7 months depending on the size and development of your puppy. The cost for this procedure varies considerably from vet to vet.

Puppies are so cute. However, they will grow up and too many of them will be abandoned. Each year thousands of dogs are put to sleep because they are unwanted. The best way to stop this national tragedy is to have our pets sterilized, or in your case have your male puppy neutered. To have a male dog neutered is to promote his good health and prevent more unwanted puppies. It is difficult to contain unaltered dogs when there are female dogs around. Many become destructive and restless. Neutered dogs are also unlikely to get into dog fights because they are generally less aggressive.

  • Not only does neutering prevent reproductive cancers and leg-hiking, it also means you are preventing future unplanned litters of puppies! Unless you have a specific plan to breed your male, please netuer him!
