Puppy Selection: Do Non-Shedding, Hypo-Allergenic Dogs Exist?

del.icio.us

Summary: Many people would love a non-shedding dog. Oftentimes, people refer to several breeds as Hypo-Allergenic. We explore the non-shedding, hypo-allergenic dog in this article.

Many people want a non-shedding, hypo-allergenic dog. However, all dogs shed some. Some dogs definitely shed less than others. These dogs are referred to as non-shedding, though the amount of hair they shed is about as much as humans which is hardly noticeable. Dogs who do not have much of an undercoat are the ones that are usually called non-shedding.
Some of the non-shedding breeds are: Poodles, Shih Tzus, Schnauzers, Lhasa Apsos, and of course the hairless, Chinese Crested. It is a common idea that short-hair dogs would shed far less than long-haired dogs. That statement is simply not true! As cute as they are, darling pugs shed a ton!

There really isn’t a dog that is hypoallergenic. Although, there are dogs that give off much less dander and allergens than other breeds. Since some dogs do shed less, it may be manageable for some people that have asthma and allergies. Obviously though, if you cannot handle fur without an asthma attack, a dog or cat is not for you.
