But that doesn’t mean they don’t work. Perhaps my dog is just stubborn. I have seen those new ones that are for dogs who are left home alone while their owners are at work. Maybe try that kind.

Hi. I have a large dog (about 50 lbs). He is about 2 years old. We adopted him from our local shelter. He is absolutely the best dog! However, he has not had any leash training, (or so it seems.) Someone told me to use a pinch collar, but does that hurt the dog? Someone else said to use a harness. I tried it and he still pulled me around the block! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are considering getting a puppy, have you thought about the pound? They are microchipped and fixed and up to date on all their shots. Could be a good option for you since you aren’t too concerned about a specific breed.

One thing I will say is even if you buy a pure bred puppy, you have the same odds of getting health problems. The only precaution you can take is to make sure the parents of your potential puppy have been tested and cleared for breeding.

    Good luck!

We are trying to train a miniature schnauzer puppy. We don’t have a crate. We have been keeping her blocked off in the kitchen when we are gone. Any suggestions?

Hey, guess what! I have been trying that new technique for exactly one day. It is already making a difference. He is way better behaved when we come in the house now. And when he does get excited, he’s not as crazy. He still needs more work, but this is definitely working for us.

Hi clbroadbent. We must live in the same area because our local shelter also pays $5 per pit bull! That’s funny. I agree with most of what you have said.

My dog is already neutered (because he came from the pound), and I have never had an “intact” male before, so I really don’t know much about this topic other than the things I have heard or read… My mom had a dog that had puppies and she said it was so much fun to watch peoples faces when they picked out their puppy. She said people were so excited (like Christmas for a little child!).

Here is some information I have found to be interesting. Note: it’s all about being responsible owners and doing what is best for you and your dog.

This website offers a great article on the spay/neuter discussion. If you are seriously considering what to do, I really think this site will help you understand more about the health risks and benefits of spay/neutering or not. It seems to be unbiased and argues for both sides. It’s all around a good article. Click the link below to go straight to the article.

I personally just use a brand of dog food that is “fortified” with vitamins. Maybe your vet would have some good ideas.
